Focus on Long III

Going REALLY long... I mean Jeff fucking STRYKER long tonight, ladies ~n~ gents! Only two tunes in the entire two hour show! And the artists are two of the 20th century's heavy-hitters in the modern classical/experimental fields. Xenakis and Stockhausen. The Karlheinz piece is the one that inspired the Beatles' Revolution Number Nine. So sit back, relax, take a Xanex and melt into your recliner, cause these two ditties are loooong and slooooow and trippe'!

Having RL issues so am quite in the rears now with the blog... SORRY! This show actually aired on November 28th and MAY be lost in the mists of time... ITSELF! I left the capture program running in the studio all night and there was a power outage the next morning and I haven't been in yet to see if the show survived yet. I completely forgot last week that it was Friday until 2AM, so I didn't even do one then... This list continues my focus on long numbers.

Focus on long 1

As the title of this post implies, I've decided to devote a few shows to some of the longer pieces performed by some of the list's artists. I'm still planning on throwing in one crammed with as many acts as I can fit into my 2 hour show, seeing as I have in my library well over 100 songs clocking in under a minute, perhaps even more clock in at over 1/2 an hour. I try and put some 15, 20 minute bits in each week and occasionally sneak in a 30, but I don't get a chance to play many and some of the acts ONLY have songs that long or longer, so they don't get much attention at all on this podcast. Many of the latter also focus mainly on experimental/concrete/inaccessible stuff so in the coming weeks there will be shows devoted mainly to that, not unlike what I did on Halloween (which will this weekend along with the other casts not on the blog, be put there)...

Behind again...

Sorry for being 6 weeks of shows behind... AGAIN! lol. The computer at the radio station I use to upload the shows after they're recorded has been off the interwebs for a few weeks now. I've gone in each week expecting it fixed but finding it not. I am going to bring a thumb drive with me this week and get it all caught up this weekend.

Short to Long...

A couple weeks ago I promised to devote a show to as many acts as I could and seeing how actually well over a hundred of the pieces I have collected are under a minute, this should be easy. ...but hella time consuming so I've put it off. This week though KIIIIIiiinda in that theme, I had WinAmp male me another random list and the 1st 1:45 worth of the songs ranged in length from about a minute to about a half an hour. I thought it would be interesting to arrange them from shortest to longest... LET'S SEE IF IT STICKS TO THE FUCKING WALL NOW!!!!!

No special theme...

Last week I promised on the show that this week I'd cram as many acts into a single two hour program that I could. Which ended up being more time consuming a prospect than I had bargained for as there are literally hundreds of songs from artists off the list in my collection that are under a single minute. Compiling and blogging that set list would have taken more time than I had set aside this week to do so. In turn, I just threw together another "random" (per WinAmp and my editing) list that begins up eat and slows down to degenerate nonsense... NEXT week though is Halloween and as many of the acts have songs WELL in excess of 30 minutes (some an entire hour) I plan to mix multiple lengthy ambient, concrete and vocal tracks together... maybe throwing in some irdials and creepy turn-of-the 20th century stuff to create a spooky soundscape... for AT LEAST three hours if not more.

Trying to AVOID Jass...

Going over the last month's+ shows I've noticed that I've been playing a LOT of Jassy stuff. Fusion, avant garde, straight... It's kind of hard to avoid as a genre in the list a ,many acts delve into it. So tonight I tried to avoid it altogether. I let a couple slip in, but most of the pieces I picked can be called, "accessible but still weird". Mostly upbeat and fun stuff and I let WinAmp choose a "random" mix this time instead of arranging the songs from accessible/uptempo to inaccessible and drudging. All of the file from the last 6 shows are now ready to edit which I plan to do tonight after this, the 7th episode I am behind in uploading. Looking forward to being caught up!

Feelin' JASS-y tonight!

.........it's called, "The IRREGULAR Show"....ok? Alright though, now that summer is over and fall term has begun at the University of Oregon from which I transmit this crap, I will be on pretty much every week for the next 7 or 8 months... and in the winter over the December break I will likely have my semi-yearly "6 hours of fucked up Xmas music" marathon, so mark your calendars for the 25th of December from midnight to 6AM. ANYhow, as the title of this post implies, I am going Jazzy tonight with the NWW list fare. Mostly pretty upbeat and "dancey" so if you FEEL like it, grab some stranger off the alley in back your placez and grease up your kitchen floor so's you two can scoots around in comfy shoes to the big, boppy bass beats jammin' in yer ears. (and of course I veer off at the end)

Familiar to savvy North Americans...

You know, the thing about procrastinating a weekly task is that after 4 or 5 weeks it becomes a chore of cumulative tasks... Anyhow, it turns out the 25 artists I selected that I deem a truly musically aware North American should be... well, aware of lend themselves (with long and some sudden intros and outros and longer than 5 minute tracks) to more complicated mixing than I normally endeavour. 10, 20, 30... up to 60 seconds of crossfade this week at times. A very electronic at first, then rocky then quiet/odd and sombre at the end set. Nice to drift to sleep to. OH YA! AND I MADE IT 3 HOURS instead of TWO!! Have fun and I will also try and keep the discourse to 1X an hour.

OK, I suck...

So, I missed another show and as of 2AM I'll be 4 podcast postings behind. I'm involved in a local theater troupe (Trek Theatre) that does live performances of TNG episodes and this time around I'm concurrently Production Manager, Stage Manager, Sound Tech and making props and set pieces. Also been dealing with a twat I work with at my new job and it's been a record setting hot Summer here in Eugene and I hate Summer and heat... So, I've just not been in the mood to spend any more spare time on 'worky obligations'... The play is now in performance so I have four less days of "must attends" so after tonight's show, before the weekend is out (maybe) I'll have everything caught up... Or not.

Women II

Holy CRAP I'm behind! I  missed a show two weeks ago and the last two times I was in the studio, I forgot to bring my thumb drive so I could take the show home to post on my podcast... I PROMISE that I'll bring the last 3 home tonight and post them by Sunday night. I am involved in a production of a Star Trek TNG episode adaptation (DejaQ) with a local sci-fi theater company and need to make final edits all the sound effects by tomorrow so I won';t have time to post the shows before then... Probably tomorrow night but DEFINITELY by Sunday... So as the title of this post reads, this is the SECOND all WOMEN show I'm doing from the list and it's pretty comprehensive, though I might have missed one or two groups with female vocalists on a song here and there, though I have included such as Lemon Kittens with a Danielle Dax vocal and The Inner Space, the proto-Can group Jaki Liebezeit was in that has a couple tunes with Rosey Rosey (or Rosemarie Heinikel as she was born). Get set to hear two hours worth of GORGEOUS female throat oscillations!!

On a hot summer night...

...would you offer your THROAT.... to the wolf with the red... roses? Yes, it's a FULL TWO HOURS of JIM STEINMAN and MEATLOAF!.... erm.... not. Nothing AGAINST them, of course. "Bat" is one the the most CLASSIC 70's rock albums EVER....! But that's just a ref to the frickin' HEAT! I was in Florence, Or earlier today and though the sun was hot, the wind felt chilly as the arctic blast it was. Like sitting in front of a HUGE air conditioner while outside in the sunshine. Really odd. ANY-how... As opposed to last week's German invasion, this week I feature no bands from Rhineland to realign things. As usual I start out accessible and tonight I'm drifting into the 'iffy' range per really out there tunes a bit early. Usually it's the last 30, 45 minutes but tonight I think it's about an hour or more. Guess the line is fine depending on where one sits on the weird music fence. I AM featuring 3 minimalist composer greats from the 20th century toward the end... Xenakis, Stockhausen and Reich. Ending with white noise basically (literally, actually on a couple levels) with a classic Whitehouse number.

(with appropriate exclamation marks) And per the special list, I won't be playing a comedy piece 1/2 way pointy this week either. So, FUCK you laughers with your giggly chuckles!

OK, I didn't do one last week...

...I had a job interview on Saturday and didn't want to stay up that late before hand. I got the job. I'm playing mostly shorter songs this week so can jam in more than usual. I really like tonight's mix. Fun stuff at the beginning and not too much 'noise' to lose the squeamish later on. I'm also adding one of two planned new features this week. I found myself considering what artists would be included on the list from Comedy Recordings? I've decided at the midway point now to play NWW List era Comedy bits and maybe even veer into the 80's and 90's a bit with appropriately based nonsense... Starting it off tonight with a CLASSIC Python bit.

A decent amount of Brits tonight with a smattering of Jazz, some Kraut heavy hitters in the form of Faust and Guru² and not that much TOOOO hard to listen to at the end... I went with more soothing than serrated this week for the show's finalé to amke up for last week's almost solid hour of metal banging and the like... Also I decided that Henry Gibson's, Keep-a-Goin' from the Nashville OST was a little too short an outro so am changing it up to YMO's Cosmic Surfin'. Thought it fitting as 1/5 of the acts on the list are Kosmische Musik (KR) and YMO, though not on the list are kind of like the Japanese Kraftwerk who is... (seewhatIdidthere?)

Starting out a bit on the Anarcho-punk side tonight with Crass and Poison girls from the UK. I've decided to switch up my opening tune after all with this new incarnation of the show by using Pierre Henry & Michel Colombier's Psyché Rock, the song that decades later inspired the theme to Matt G's, "Futurama" series. Figure an opening theme actually from an artist on the list rather than from Robert Altman's masterpiece, Nashville would be more appropriate. Also trying out a new closing other than Imelda May's, I'm Alive, though not from the list. Trying on another tune from Nashville in that slot with Henry Gibson of Laugh-In fame's, Keep-a-Goin'. I've decided to start out the shows at this point with up-beat numbers, slowing down into the second hour, perhaps lulling the unwary to sleep and then tossing out ambient Concrete and the like in the final portion of the show to then induce nightmares...

OK, tonight.....

There was a programming SNAFU but all is solved now and my new time slot is TONIGHT (Saturday mornings) from Midnight to 2AM PST. The setlist from yesterday will now air then...

...or not...

The Programming Director fucked up. Not sure when I'll be on........ Not THIS slot though..................................

Thursday, June 12, 2014

Back on tonight....

Of course my new show's timeslot affords me the return as the 1st show of the day on a Friday the 13th... After over a year's hiatus, I'm back on the air and starting off strong. Not doing any themes yet... just taking all 10K songs from NWW List artists I have, putting them in a random order and accepting the 1st reasonably, decent, non-repetitive per artist list, arranged from fast and upbeat to slow and weird, less accessible stuff... In other words: Concrete... lol! I decided to keep the same opening and closing songs as well as I just really enjoy how they work with everything. Kismet offered me Zappa and Beefheart to open with..!

...waiting...

Today was the deadline for summer quarter time slot requests, so I should know in a couple days when I'll be back on.

Wednesday, May 7, 2014

Going back on-air...

Over the past few decades I've had college radio shows on and off in three different states. One gets burnt out off and on which is why I've been away for a bit. I've once again been wishing to broadcast again so I plan to start up the show once again this summer. I'll let you know when I get more info after speaking with my Program Director. Cheers!
